radio silence week # 8 オーストラリア/トンガ
世界各地から「ディスタンスの静寂」を届けるkugenumaの新作、radio silenceが更新されました。
第8週は南太平洋、ヌーサとトンガから。オーストラリア東海岸サンシャインコーストの北に位置するヌーサは、自然環境のなかで展開するユニークなアートフェスティバルで知られています。ジャンクションと呼ばれるダウンタウンの一角にはアートギャラリーがありますが、自然の音と都会の音がミックスされた豊かな音風景には、戻ってきたバイタリティが感じられます。
いっぽうのトンガは、2022年1月15日に起きたフンガ・トンガ＝フンガ・ハアパイ火山で大きな災害に見舞われました。稀に見る巨大な噴火は、太平洋沿岸地域で、空気の振動や大きな潮位の変動が観測されました。大西洋でも観測されたといいますから、海底火山は地球を一個のスピーカーに変えてしまったと言えるかもしれません。分厚い火山灰に覆われた海岸には、風と波の音がするばかりですが、その合間に子どもたちの声も混じり、レジリアンスの力を伝えているようです。

Episode 8: Noosa and Tonga
kugenuma’s radio silence is a weekly broadcast at the 500 Meter Museum transmitting “silences of distances” from around the world. Week 8’s program comes from the South Pacific, Noosa, and Tonga. Noosa is located north of the Sunshine Coast on Australia’s eastern seaboard, best-known for its natural environment-based art festivals. At Junction, Noosa’s downtown district, an art gallery is reignited with urban and nature sounds intermixing into a soundscape of renewed conviviality. On the contrary, Tonga suffered a major disaster with the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano on January 15, 2022. The rare and massive eruption triggered air oscillations and large tidal fluctuations in the Pacific coastal regions. The soundwaves have been monitored as far as the Atlantic Ocean. We could believe that the undersea volcano turned the earth into a single audio speaker. There are only the sounds of winds and waves on the coast covered with thick volcanic ash, but within and between the sounds, children’s voices emerge in and out, seemingly conveying the power of resilience.

radio silence week # 7 ジョン・ケージ /武満徹 特集
世界各地から「ディスタンスの静寂」を届けるkugenumaの新作、radio silenceが更新されました。第７週は特別プログラムとして、ジョン・ケージと武満徹へのオマージュで構成しています。
radio silenceはジョン・ケージ作曲「4分33秒」の、1952年初演から70周年に際したオマージュでもあります。ケージのこの作品は「沈黙の発明」として、音楽のみならず、現代芸術に大きな影響を与えました。右チャンネルはキノコの世界的研究者でもあったケージが80年代に行ったレクチャーを元にしています。
ケージが最初に来日したのは1962年ですが、その機会に札幌で現代音楽祭を企画したのが、武満徹でした。同行したデビッド・チュードアとともに、ケージは登別温泉の地獄谷などを訪れたことが知られています。それ以降、武満と札幌との交流は深く、1982年には札幌交響楽団による世界初演コンサートも開かれました。左チャンネルでは、その際に行われた特別講演のなかの、あるエピソードを取り上げています。詳しくは、今週発売になった新刊『武満徹、世界の・札幌の』をご覧ください。

Episode 7: Cage / Takemitsu Tribute
kugenuma’s radio silence is a weekly broadcast at the 500 Meter Museum transmitting “silences of distances” from around the world. This week’s program is a special tribute to John Cage and Toru Takemitsu. Conceptually, radio silence is also an unspoken tribute to John Cage’s “4 minutes 33 seconds”, this year being the 70th anniversary of its premiere in 1952. This “Invention of Silence” was Cage’s seminal work having a significant influence on the future directions of new music and contemporary art. The right channel audio source is an excerpt from Cage’s 1985 performance of his mesostic poem “MUSHROOMS et Variationes.” As a world-renowned researcher of mushrooms, Cage frequently implemented it as a medium for his compositions.
When John Cage first visited Japan in 1962, Toru Takemitsu organized a contemporary music festival in Sapporo for that occasion. Accompanied by long-time collaborator David Tudor, the troupe visited the Jigokudani site of Noboribetsu Hot Springs, among other areas around Sapporo. This historic visit also established a meaningful connection between Takemitsu and the city of Sapporo for years to come. In 1982, a legendary concert featuring the world premiere of three Takemitsu pieces was performed by the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra. The left channel audio features an episode about a special lecture organized for the composer on the occasion of the concert. Further readings on this subject are available in a forthcoming book, “Toru Takemitsu: Of The World / Of Sapporo.”

第5週のプログラムはスウェーデンの首都ストックホルムとバルト海の対岸にあるフィンランドの都市トゥルクから。さまざまなミュージアムが集まるストックホルムの街角を散歩する人は、ふと陸軍博物館の前で足を止めます。静かな日常のなかにも、かすかな変化が起きている。戦争の影でしょうか。トゥルクからの音にも車を運転するような、ごく普通の一日が聞こえますが、女性の声が語るのは、コロナ流行以来一家の交流が途絶えたことへの嘆き。家族の歴史がきざまれているサマーハウスにも、ディスタンスがもたらす沈黙が訪れているようです。

Episode 5: Stockholm and Turku
kugenuma’s radio silence is a weekly broadcast at the 500 Meter Museum transmitting “silences of distances” from around the world. The fifth week’s program comes from Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, and Turku, a city in Finland on the other side of the Baltic Sea. Strolling along the streets of Stockholm, the city of museums, we take note of the Swedish Army Museum. Even in the quietness of everyday life, a faint change is taking place. Is it the shadow of war? The sounds from Turku are of another ordinary, everyday life of driving a car, but a woman’s voice laments the loss of family interaction since the pandemic. It seems that even in the summer house, where the family’s history is profound, there is a silence brought about by distancing. Her mourning is the loss of contact with other members of her mother’s family who no longer feel the need for genuine encounters and communication. Underlying the situation is the exercise of power that led to the sale of a shared historic summer place that had been a natural meeting place for the family and where the children grew up into the family. Now that history is cut off.

This week’s program streams from Kherson, southern Ukraine.
This waterside scene in the Dnieper River basin is where migratory birds arrive with the coming of spring. This recording was made before the Russian military invasion and Kherson is reportedly in imminent danger of capture.We pray for the safety of the citizens and the urgent restoration of peace. The following is an English translation of the audio narration.
It is the end of winter, and I am sitting on the bank of the Dnieper River.
There are many lakes in the delta of southern Ukraine.
Nature is awakening. There is still no green; everything is gray.
We can hear the birds singing. Some birds seem to have overwintered.
The migratory birds will be here soon.
There is no wind, and it is very quiet, but yesterday, the weather was completely different.

世界各地から「ディスタンスの静寂」を届けるkugenumaの新作、radio silenceが更新されました。第４週のプログラムはウクライナ南部の街ヘルソンから。春の訪れとともに渡り鳥がやってくるドニエプル川流域の水辺の風景。この録音はロシア軍の侵攻以前に行われたものですが、ヘルソンはいま制圧の危機に瀕していると報じられています。市民の無事と一刻もはやく平和が戻ってくることを心から願うばかりです。以下は後半に収められている語りの日本語訳です。

第9回500m美術館賞 入選展で展示中のkugenuma(キオ・グリフィス＋港千尋）
世界各地から「ディスタンスの静寂」を届けるradio silenceが更新されました。
第3週のプログラムは済州島と沖縄から。 風の島と呼ばれる済州島南岸にあるクロンビ海岸。巨大な一枚岩で知られる景勝地ですが、ここには巨大な海軍基地が建設され、景観は大きく変わっています。いっぽう沖縄那覇市の新都心、丘からの眺めはふつうの都市に見えますが、ここにも軍事化された島の歴史が横たわっています。地理的にも歴史的にも共通点の少なくない2つの島ですが、軍事化に抵抗する眼差しも共有されているようです。

This week’s program streams from Jeju island and Okinawa. Gureombi Beach is located on the southern coast of Jeju Island, also known as the Island of the Winds. It is a scenic spot known for its colossal monolithic rocks, but the landscape has been drastically interrupted by the construction of an exorbitant naval base. Meanwhile, Naha City, Okinawa’s Shin-Toshin urban center, seems like a typical cityscape from the hills, but the history of this militarized island runs deep. Geographically and historically, the two islands have much in common, and they also share a familiar gaze that resists militarization

第2週のプログラムはカナダ/アメリカの国境をはさみ、トロントとデトロイトから。国境にあるアンバサダーブリッジは、カナダが新たに導入した新型コロナ規制に抗議するトラック運転手により始まった抗議デモで閉鎖され、北米最大の物流と人流が止まったままで、オタワをはじめ大都市では非常事態が続いています。トロント郊外では、ふだんは騒音でしかない車の音が、たゆみない日常の証であることを感じさせる高層マンションから、いっぽうデトロイト側ではアンバサダーブリッジ付近から、それぞれのサイレンスをお届けします。500メートル美術館会場のkugenuma作品のQRコードから、あるいはこちらのリンクからお聴きください。

Episode 2: Toronto / Detroit

This week’s incoming program streams from Toronto, Canada, and Detroit, Michigan’s Ambassador Bridge. The U.S./Canada border has been closed due to protests initiated by truck drivers denouncing Canada’s newly introduced COVID regulations. As a result, the heaviest logistics and traffic flow in North America has halted, leaving Ottawa and other neighboring metropolitan areas in a state of emergency. The suburbs of Toronto resonate in the white noise of moving cars, a reminder of daily life. In Detroit, the evocative silence from the Ambassador Bridge flows below into the Detroit River. radio silence は＜ソーシャル・ディスタンス時代のラジオ＞です。ガラスケースに閉じ込められた沈黙の風景の向こう側に、さまざまなサイレンスがひろがっています。埋め込まれたQRコードを読みこみ、ゆっくり歩きながら聴いてください。24メートルの風景に向かって、左側のQRコードを読み込むと左（L）チャンネル、向かって右端のQRコードを読み込むと右（R)チャンネルの音声を聴くことができます。離れた地点で録音された、それぞれのサイレンスが流れてきます。
＜ラジオ＞は2月12日にスタート、毎週土曜日に更新される予定です。第１回はLチャンネルが神奈川県の鵠沼海岸、Rチャンネルが米国ロサンゼルスにあるターミナル・アイランドの音です。たとえばiPhone2台で、LチャンネルとRチャンネルの音声を同時に再生すると、太平洋の両岸の音がステレオになります。片方は移民が渡っていった岸辺であり、他方は巨大監獄のある港湾でもあります。
2回目以降ではパンデミックで顕在化するボーダーや、沈黙を芸術の核心の問題として考え抜いたジョン・ケージと武満徹の特集などを予定しています。それぞれの場所や状況に関する情報は、特設サイトでご覧ください。なお本作品は会場から遠く離れていても聴くことが可能な＜ラジオ＞です。
